What is Vibe Design? Why Designers Need to Master the Skill of Verbalizing Intent

|Fumi Nozawa

In March 2026, with the major update to Google's UI design tool Stitch, the concept of Vibe Design has rapidly moved to the forefront of the industry. The process of building style guides and components, which once took designers days or weeks, can now be completed with incredible speed through verbal definition and AI-driven extraction.

This article explores the essence of Vibe Design and why the ability to verbalize design intent is becoming a mandatory skill for modern designers.

The Core of Vibe Design: Defining the Vibe to Generate UI

Vibe Design is an approach where UI is constructed by starting with the intent or atmosphere (the vibe) of a product, rather than starting with detailed wireframes.

By giving the AI instructions such as a trustworthy fintech app or a playful coffee shop ordering screen, the AI captures that intent and instantaneously generates color palettes, typography, and corner radius rules. In the latest version of Stitch, it is even possible to extract these design essences directly from an existing URL.

This technology allows not just designers, but also engineers and marketers, to visually output their mental images as high-fidelity UI drafts - essentially a one-click generation based on words.

Managing AI Design Systems with design.md

The technical foundation supporting Vibe Design is a new format called design.md (Design Markdown). This is a design system document that describes project design rules in a simple text format.

The true value of an AI design system lies in its reproducibility and portability. A lightweight text file can hold the same level of definition as complex style guides previously managed in canvas-based tools like Figma. AI agents can then read this file directly to apply the rules to any new screen.

Once created, a design.md file can be easily ported and reused across different projects. Design assets are no longer locked within a specific design tool; they have evolved into a common language that AI can understand and share across an entire organization.

The Shift Toward Verbalization and Review Skills

As the speed of visual generation increases, the role of the designer is shifting from the manual construction of elements to the verbalization of definitions and the evaluation of AI outputs.

AI-generated designs can often fall into a template-like feel - an average design that lacks unique brand character. While AI wins on speed, only a human designer can determine if the output aligns with the brand’s core essence and if the user experience is truly intuitive.

With the interactive features in Stitch, designers can refine designs in real-time by conversing with the AI. In this new era, the ability to accurately verbalize design intent and provide professional critiques of AI drafts will be a more critical skill than ever before.

Conclusion

Vibe Design has evolved the design process from a labor-intensive task into a process of defining and extracting the ideal state of a product through language. With the emergence of AI design systems via design.md, these efforts are now reusable assets that transcend individual projects.

By combining the lightning-fast output of AI with the sophisticated judgment of human designers, we are now able to bring products to life at an unprecedented pace.
